Autumn Festivals

  ★English translation

As October comes along, various autumn festivals both big and small are held in the south western part of Hyogo Prefecture in Japan, at place called Banshu.

One particularly famous one is the Nada no Kanka Festival.
On the eve of the festival, which is known as Yoi Miya, miniature versions of the portable shrines from the main event, known as the7 shrines, are carried on shoulders and paraded around the town .

On the day of the festival, known as the Hon Miya, 3 potable shrines named the Ichi no Maru, Ni no Maru and San no Maru are crashed against each other.

Men dressed in Mawashi or Fundoshi ( which are a kind of traditional underwear – see photo) crash the portable shrines with all their might, and create a spectacular festival.

Japanese people have an image of Japan's autumn festivals as being quiet and reserved affairs, but this one overturns those perceptions – it is a pulsating, full blooded one.

What kind of festivals do you have in your country ?
