囲碁は楽しい !?

 
囲碁に使う道具は碁盤と碁石だけです。
白石を持つ人と黒石を持つ人が碁盤の上に、写真のように縦線と横線の交わったところに、交互に石を置きます。縦と横の線の交わったところを目といい、目をより多く囲んだ方が勝ちです。
ルールは簡単です。
碁盤を戦場と考え、どのような戦略を立てるか、囲碁は戦略を競うゲームです。だから、負けると悔しいのです。いつも囲碁を打つ相手のことを碁敵というほどです。
コンピューターがこれほど発達しても、中くらい囲碁の実力があれば、コンピューターには負けません。チェスや将棋のようにキングや王がいないから、コンピューターは攻める目標を見つけることができないのです。
碁会所で碁敵に負けた悔しい思いをコンピューターにぶつける人も多(おお)いようです。

★English translation

The only equipment you need to play a game of Go are a Go board and some Go stones. The person using the white stones and the person using the black stones take turns in placing their pieces on the board criss-crossing each other in horizontal and vertical lines as shown in the picture. The points where the horizontal and vertical lines intersect are know as Eyes. The player with the most Eyes surrounded wins.

The rules are simple. Think of the Go board as a battle field, and think over what kind of strategy you want to use, because Go is a competition of strategy. So when you lose, it feels bitter. So much so that in Go, the opponent is always thought of as an enemy.

Even though computers have developed to their present level, any player with a medium level skill at Go would not lose to a computer. Because there are no kings or queens like in chess or Shogi, the computer cannot find a goal to focus on.

I've heard that there are a lot of people who, after losing a match in a commercial Go parlour, vent their bitter feelings onto a match against a computer.
